Honkenbonkers was in the Austin District 10 Spotlight Newsletter!
Austin District 10 City Council Member, Sheri Gallo shouted out about Honkenbonkers in her Blog/Newsletter this Fall.
I met Council Member Gallo at the Tarrytown United Methodist Church unloading pumpkins for the annual pumpkin patch. She was excited to hear about the word Honkenbonkers. One of the church’s youth group directors made the introduction. Thanks Taylor!

At first glance Reed Elenz may look like an ordinary Austin teenager. We however call Reed extraordinary or… honkenbonkers! Reed is of the 10 to 15 percent of Americans who have Dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by difficulty reading. Reed however, is not letting that stop him from making a difference. That’s why we think he’s Honkenbonkers!
Honkenbonkers is actually a fun word (clearly we like it) Reed made up. It simply means awesome or amazing, but this made up word is actually getting traction. A Wall Street Journal article that forecasts new word trends gave Reed’s word some praise. Even NFL players have joined what Reed calls the “Honkenbonker Nation.” Check them out on Reed’s website.
Reed even sells “honkenbonker” shirts! Reed has donated some of the proceeds to sponsor Austin Independent SchooI District’s Central Texas Dyslexia Conference which will be held next Friday, October 9th.
Reed is a senior at Austin High School, is interested in computers and is the Austin High mascot, Mr. Maroo! Reed’s mom, Amber Elenz, is the AISD District 5 School Board Trustee.
